Our History
The Accountant General's Department was established in 1868 and has served as Jamaica's central treasury for over 150 years. As an operational department within the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, the AGD is responsible for the management and disbursement of public funds through the Consolidated Fund.
The Department is led by the Accountant General, appointed by the Governor General on the advice of the Public Services Commission under Section 15 of the Financial Administration and Audit (FAA) Act. The Accountant General is supported by an Executive Management Team comprising three Deputy Accountants General and three Senior Directors, overseeing four operational divisions and two supporting divisions.
Today the AGD administers salaries for approximately 17 Ministries and Departments, manages pensions and gratuities for over 40,000 retired government employees, and maintains Jamaica's public debt records β making it one of the most consequential departments in the Government of Jamaica.
