Pension Eligibility & Options
Who Qualifies?
Officers with at least 10 years of continuous service may retire under these conditions:
- At age 55 or older (age 50 in special circumstances with Governor General approval)
- Upon transfer to another public service
- On medical grounds — Government Medical Board certification required
- Due to office abolition or service reorganisation
- In the public interest

Pension Payment Options
What happens while waiting for your first pension?
An Alimentary Allowance — a provisional pension — is granted while your reduced pension is being finalised. Typically processed within 2–3 weeks. Monthly pension commences on the next payday after system entry.
Life Certificate
Your Life Certificate is the primary document used to confirm your eligibility for pension payments. It must be submitted once per year, in the month of your birthday.
Three Certificate Types
- Original System-printed certificate sent to each pensioner
- Duplicate Issued if your original is lost or damaged
- Overseas For pensioners who have migrated but are still paid locally

Additional Benefits
Health Insurance (GPASO)
Available to pensioners aged 55+. A partnership with Sagicor Life — Government covers 90%, pensioner pays 10%. Individual or family coverage; supplemental (Medigap) hospitalization plans also available.
Temporary Supplement
Cabinet-approved yearly increases for pensioners aged 55+ retired at least 2½ years. Guaranteed minimums: $15,000/mo (10–19 yrs, ages 55–64) • $19,000/mo (20+ years service).
Deferred Pension
Officers who left service with 10+ continuous years (or 15+ total years including breaks) before retiring age can receive a deferred pension commencing at age 60.
Death Benefits
Estate receives one year's pensionable emoluments or commuted pension gratuity (whichever is greater). Widows, widowers, and dependent children are eligible for survivor pensions. Children's pensions continue to age 19 (or 23 if in school).
Overseas Pensioners
Pensioners living abroad must establish permanent resident status. Send a notarised letter to the Pensions Unit with proof of legal permanent residence. Use the Overseas Life Certificate type for submissions.
